This is me before setting out on the 13-hour drive back to Austin. It was supposed to be 15, but fuck the law! Right, bro?! That is also the mural my aunt, Linda, painted at the mission. I didn’t have any car trouble til I was about 100 miles outside of Austin in Bumfuck, TX, at 10PM. I managed to let the car cool off and get it to a Shell station, where the guy there helped me out. I had to eat a snickers bar to calm myself down, since the feeling of SO CLOSE, BUT SO FAR was setting in. Anyway, I made it back alright, and haven’t been in the car since. I’ve had enough driving for a long time.
Stay tuned to my other tumblr for new adventures.
So I was staying in Tohatchi, NM, at St. Mary’s Mission. My aunt lived there for 7 or 8 years, creating a bunch of paintings and a big mural for the church. I’m not religious at all, but everyone there was very welcoming to me. I stayed two days and three nights, eating a lot of delicious food, watching humming birds outside the window, stray cats trying to eat the birds, walking around the hills behind the little town, sweating, using an old computer that took about 15 minutes to start, and getting to know a lot more about my Aunt. It’s funny to find out so much about her after her death, since I have ended up along the same path(artist/traveler) and didn’t know her too well when she was alive.
Walking around the hills.
New Mexico! Some awesome graffiti I happened upon.
This is where I camped in Arizona. It was outside of Lake Havasu City, north of their airport. It was a pain in the ass to find, but after talking to some locals and driving around in the dark, I stumbled upon it. Pretty happy that I only paid to camp once this entire trip.
This room was pretty amazing. It’s where all the tourists seemed to congregate, though.
Some bugs.
Roz in the museum. It was gnarly to see all the rotting, taxidermied animals. The baby owls were the most haggard, but I didn’t get a good picture. They looked like misshapen cotton balls someone had glued some tree bark too. Anyway, I challenged these mammoths to a fight, but they are pacifists. Maybe that’s why they’re DEAD.
